I’ve never had anything custom made- What does the process look like?
Whatever you are looking to create, it starts with a Bespoke Costume/Garment Consultation either in person, at The Huckleberry House or via video call. Consultations usually last 60-90 minutes and are a deep dive into your design goals, inspirations, color story, technical/functional considerations, fabric preferences, timeline and budget. If it feels like a good creative fit and you’d like to move forward with a bespoke commission, there is a $200 (fully refundable) deposit to hold your spot in Émilie’s sewing book.
Based on your consultation, Émilie will create mood boards and design sketches for you to help refine the final design. Once all design elements have been decided, you will receive a final design sketch that includes planned fabrics and planned embellishments. This is the basis for your estimate. (Any changes in the design process that impact your estimate upwards will not be made without your explicit permission.)
Garment measurements are taken approximately 4 weeks before your sewing time. This helps ensure the best possible fit in your garment for your big day (or night!). Measurements can be taken in studio or via video call. If you are being measured for a garment remotely, it’s helpful (but not required) to have a second person there to hold the measuring tape straight.
What if it doesn’t fit right?
Custom clothing should fit you like, well, it should fit like it was made for you. Accurate measurements are a great starting point, but for items made with non-stretch or delicate fabrics, I find a toile (or two or three . . .) is best to ensure the perfect final fit. Toiles and fittings are always included in the price of your garment, as are any needed alterations.
How long does it take?
In general, special occasion wear takes around 8-10 weeks. Burlesque and ballroom costume time frames may be longer, depending on the level of complexity and embellishment required. If you are ordering a burlesque or ballroom costume and absolutely need it less than 8 weeks from time of order, rush sewing may be available.
